Not Done Yet

Well, I thought I was done for the day, but I'm not. I'm going out to look at an apartment right now. Ugh. But the price and location is pretty good. I was just talking to another teacher about renting a place together, but if this is nice... I will just have toditch this poor teacher. Hey, every man for himself.

Ugh, no luck. I know I've only been looking for a place to live for a few days (okay, a replacement place to live), but it is sooo discouraging. I just looked at my calender and I have about two weeks to find a new place to live. Ick and Ugh and Agh.

The place that I saw: okay location, okay price... but I don't think I could live there. It was so empty--total bachelor pad. There were two other people there, both Med students and the place just felt so cold and empty. I could stay there if it were going to just be temporary (like 2 weeks), but I couldn't live there for longer than that.

Don't give up, Deirdre!
And I thought of a thing--winter solstice was 22 December. Them days are getting longer, honey.
Um, is fresh produce pretty readily available? And if so, is most of it, you know, recognizable?
*which reminds me of my favourite "just what is the minimum hiring requirement at Giant, anyway?" story--I was in the checkout with a ton of crap and get up to the cashier, some nice Aryan child of about 18. He's going through my produce, and pauses at an item which is not packaged, and hence has no bar code. He needs to key in the four-digit ID code for the item, but he doesn't recognise it, so, sensibly, he asks me what it is.
So I tell him:
it's a cabbage.

I'm loving the photos, by the way--as usual, they're lovely, and quite belie any sense of disconnection you may be feeling there!

I did a Google search on "American expat + Prague" and came up with the following resource (there were others). Hope that helps! K

I had to catch up on the blogs I missed over the weekend. I'm glad you have options, even if none of them seem optimal at this point. But at least there's the possibility of housing with the Med students. And the other teacher. And, if all else fails, there're the Mormons. :)
You've taken so many great really looks like an amazing place.
I know you'd tutored ESL-type students before, but had you taught classes before this? Even without language barriers and culture shock, I've consistently heard that the first year is the roughest. But you're one of the toughest people I know, so I believe you can handle absolutely everything Prague can throw at you. :)

Kathie, that is the main site I am using right now. I'm also puzzling my way through some Czech Reality sites (in English, though, so it is not too difficult--but there is a lot to go through).

SOrry I'm not posting much--things here are crazy. I had two classes this morning and they were fine, I think. I have two more classes this evening and afternoon, and one class that I am observing. Then another class tomorrow morning, then a trip to the doctors, then some mad lesson prepping for Thursday and Friday. Then, thursday and friday I have classes and apartment hunting. Long, busy days...

I'll probably see you guys at the end of the week... or the end of next week, depending on how the apartment shopping goes...
