Marylanders eat the strangest stuff:

Okay, I've lived in Maryland most of my life and I do eat crabs maybe once every two or three (or five) years, but I still think they are weird. I can only eat about two crabs at once because 1. They are exhausting to eat and 2. Their little eyes start to creep me out. I know that, deep down, I am not a true Marylander. (I also don't put Old Bay on everything. I had a roommate once who had a giant tin of Old Bay [which you can only buy in Maryland. Other states have the smaller tins, but only Maryland had the gallon tins] and she put it on everything: mac and cheese, subs, spagetti, tuna fish. It was really, really disgusting. But anyway...)

They look tasty to me. Eyes bugging you out? break them off and throw 'em away.

Personally,I prefer lobster. In PEI, we use lobster for dog food, its so cheap! Canadian crabs are too small, and taste like mud. And they are hard to open neatly.

Bar clams which have been boiled for an hour in a pressure cooker are awfully good. Harder to get out of their shells than mussels though.

Never go hungry at the sea shore....

I like crabmeat. Haven't actually had to break apart the crabs to get thereto, much.
I'm likening my enjoyment of peel-n-eat shrimp to this, though, because...although they're raw when I buy 'em, they're generally de-headed, too. Getting too much of just the neck/head part is a little weird for me. :)

But...as for the crab thing, why don't you just try cracking them/opening them with the underbelly facing you...to avoid The Eyes?

Hope your trip's goin' fine....

You have to flip the crabs over to get through the shell to eat the mean inside, but once inside, you have to clean out the lungs, intestines, and "mustard"--a nasty yellow stuff that I've never really bothered to analyze too much.

I think that MD crab cakes are, without a doubt, the best. You get the crab meat without the effort and without the eyes!

Still, eating crabs seems to be a really big thing in MD (is it the same in Virginia?) Mom's MD accountant party-meeting-whatever was a giant crabfest (with accountants eating crabs. I really should have gotten a video of someone eating a crab.)

Watching an episode of "The Wire" (highly recommended) where the cops are eating crabs. Obviously, there's not a native Marylander in the lot--they eat crabs as slowly as I do. Kiddo, you could have gotten a video--as fast as most people pick, it would have lasted 2 or 3 minutes, max.-mom
